The San Juan National Forest becomes a winter wonderland when the temperature drops, with Nordic skiing facilities and trails available to adventurous guests, in addition to the regular ski runs in Purgatory ski resort. There's even dog sledding, snowmobiling, and tubing experiences that guests can undertake, making this corner of Colorado perfect for daredevils and families alike. The San Juan National Forest also contains some blissful and scenic hiking paths, such as the Purgatory Flats Trail, which snakes along Cascade Creek and winds up at the lovely Animas River, which is also used as a popular rafting spot.

During the summer months, nearby Electra Lake is open to the public for a small fee and can be used as a fishing and water sports haven, while La Plata County as a whole is a particularly attractive area for fun 4 x 4 tours. Avid historians will get a kick out of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum, which shines a light on America's locomotive prowess.
