These preserves provide guests with a diverse variety of natural habitats to explore. At La Verna Preserve, for example, guests will find 2.7 miles of trails that wind through 120 acres of forested wetlands, a freshwater marsh, coniferous and mixed hardwood forests, sedge meadows, and overgrown farmland. Crooked Farm Preserve encompasses another 130 acres of forests, open fields, and wetlands, which provide habitats for moose, white-tailed deer, minks, raccoons, foxes, and otters.
For even more enjoyment of the great outdoors, guests can visit the Rachael Carson Preserve, the Dodge Point Preserve, and the Todd Wildlife Sanctuary. Other nearby attractions include the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse Park and the Samoset Memorial.

With two beaches and a historical site within walking distance of the property, and with miles of shoreline, two rivers, 11 ponds, and 16 nature preserves in the surrounding area, guests will have no shortage of outdoor activity options.
For hiking, guests can explore nine miles of trails winding through 13 nature preserves maintained by the Pemaquid Watershed Association (WMA). Some of these trails and preserves also provide opportunities for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and fishing.
In addition to the WMA preserves, guests can also reconnect to nature at the Rachael Carson Preserve, the Dodge Point Preserve, and the Todd Wildlife Sanctuary (also known as the Todd Audubon Sanctuary). While exploring the four trails of the sanctuary, guests can also go birdwatching amid its forests and shoreline, which provide habitats to thrushes, nuthatches, warblers, ospreys, double-crested cormorants, and black guillemots.
Guests interested in water sports can go stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, row boating, sea kayaking, lake kayaking, and river kayaking on Johns Bay, Muscongus Bay, Boothbay Harbor, the Johns River, the Pemaquid River, Biscay Pond, and Pemaquid Lake. A variety of rentals, trips, and eco-tours are available through Maine Kayak, which also offers whitewater kayaking lessons on the Kennebec River and the Penobscot River.
To further explore Muscongus Bay, guests can go on cruises with Hardy Boat Cruises, which provides opportunities for seal watching, puffin watching, and eagle watching.
For swimming, guests can stroll over to Pemaquid Beach or Little Beach, or they can pedal or drive to the Bristol Mills Swimming Hole, which is four and a half miles away.
