In the Jefferson National Forest’s 'Mount Rogers National Recreation Area', and with expansive scenic views of Whitetop Mountain and Mount Rogers, Dongola Cabin is a cozy and secluded retreat -- perfect for writers and creatives seeking inspiration and solitude, couples wanting romantic getaways, solo travellers, digital nomads, astronomy enthusiasts, etc. About 30 minutes from the bustling towns of Damascus and Abingdon, the Cabin offers a restive getaway with opportunities many activities.
Dongola Cabin sits on 5 acres in the Konnarock/Troutdale area of Southwestern Virginia. Accommodations include high speed internet, full kitchen, bathroom with shower, and laundry facilities. A bed nook holds a queen bed. Two sets of french doors open the east side of this 384 sq foot tiny cabin to the sunrise and a view of Whitetop Mountain. Outside these doors, a porch runs the length of the cabin with stairs leading down to the field and a fire pit below. With no street lamps or light from other houses, the night sky often appears stunning!
The living/dining/kitchen area has reading chairs, a writing/eating table, and a bookshelf with a wide selection of reading material. The kitchen is furnished with pans, and basic cooking supplies (salt, pepper and the like). Towels and bedding are provided. A washer and dryer is available.
Guests will have access to the entire cabin (excepting a crawl space) and land around the cabin. It also has landline for domestic calls and emergencies. We are available by telephone/email/text message for any guests queries or emergencies.
The cabin is in a rural mountainous hamlet with minimal cell phone service and few street lamps. Have directions to hand before coming up the mountain. Be prepared for occasional outages.
The cabin sits close to the middle of 5 acres, so the driveway is long and steep. The trick is to go slow and steady. Don't rev the engine, but give it more gas than you think it will need to get up the hill. Our little 2-wheel drive makes it every time!
The nearest grocery store is in Chilhowie about 30 minutes away. The cabin has basic pantry items and a few provisions for emergencies, but shop for groceries before arriving. Check out: The Blue Ridge Discovery Center, the Konnarock Store and the Whitetop Store which are nearby; the Barter Theatre, and Bella's Pizza in Abingdon; the Damascus Brewery in Damascus.
