Joshua Tree National Park
8 miles straight-line distance13 kilometers straight-line distanceThis accommodation is located in Twentynine Palms, California, a city located in the central portion of Southern California. The city lies in the Mojave Desert, a large desert that stretches over most of the southwestern United States and is the driest desert in North America. Twentynine Palms is known as a gateway into the Joshua Tree National Park, at the Oasis of Mara. Southwest of the Joshua Tree National Park is the Santa Rosa and the San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, a great place for hiking amongst the mountains, offering scenic views over the region. The closest airport is the Palm Springs International Airport, which is about an hour away from the accommodation by car.
In 1937, Pasadena physician Dr. William Neugebauer discovered the charm and seclusion of Wonder Valley, about 15 miles east of Twentynine Palms, California. After frequent visits to a friend’s home there, he purchased his own 25-acre parcel and began building a unique, architect-designed adobe cottage.
The Adobe became the Neugebauer family hideaway, where the doctor would trailer the family’s horses anytime they could get away. He built a six-stall horse barn where his horses could vacation as comfortably as the rest of the family, and where Bamboo Harvester, better known by his stage name Mr. Ed, was also said to have vacationed.
Today, this accommodation is a historic vacation rental located just 15 minutes from Joshua Tree National Park. The rustic, adobe-walled structure features hand-hewn 1880s-era timber beams supporting a hand-made clay tile roof and rooftop deck. Decorated with period furniture and movie memorabilia that recall the days of Westerns and film noir, the accommodation celebrates cinema, the American cowboy, and 1950s country music.
Many desert lovers have noticed the desert is not as deserted as it once was. What drove Dr. Neugebauer all the way out to the absolute quiet of Wonder Valley may be driving glampers, too. From the property, guests will take in cross-valley vistas to Joshua Tree National Park and breathtaking views of nearby Cleghorn and Sheephole Mountain Wilderness Areas. The roads aren’t paved, but neighbors are few and far between in Wonder Valley.Activities near Twentynine Palms

Located at the entrance of the Joshua Tree National Park, there are so many great glamping activities for guests to try. Glampers can enter through the Oasis at Mara and explore the beautiful Joshua trees in which the park gets its namesake from. These trees are indigenous to the Mojave Desert, meaning they can’t be found anywhere else, so guests can take advantage of the opportunity by exploring the park and the trees. Glampers looking for a bigger challenge can head southwest to the Santa Rosa and the San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, with higher elevations and more challenging hikes. Despite the increased degree of difficulty, the views and atmosphere at the park make this park a must visit when visiting the region. Also to the southwest is the city of Palm Springs, which boasts fantastic golf courses, including some of the top-rated golf courses in the world. -
