Like Windwhistle, Springfield is another town in the Selwyn district that plays as a gateway to the region’s vibrant outdoors, including the Southern Alps. There’s much to do outside of the town, including hiking through Korowai/Torlesse Tussocksland Park, rock climbing Castle Hill, mountain biking through Mt. Hutt’s forests, and skiing down Mt. Taylor during the winter. Those visiting Springfield can also access one of the film locations for “The Lord of the Rings.” For food and wine, visit Capone’s Restaurant and The Bakery at Percival Street. Both locations offer unique foods, with Capone’s offering wine exclusive to the region. The town is the last place you can stop at before reaching the West Coast, so be sure to stock up on supplies and food here before progressing to the region’s outdoors.
