Hira

Based near the Wakapuaka River, the small town of Hira is surrounded by waters perfect for kayaking and snorkeling trips. Head to Cable Bay and find a vibrant lake surrounded by open fields great for picnics. Be sure to talk a walk down Cable Bay Walkway, a path that goes above water and out into farmland and bush. You can also head west of Hira, where you’ll find Glenduan. Home to a rocky coast and scenic cliffs, the region offers panoramic views of South Island’s Nelson coast. It’s where many locals favor picnics. Be sure to stop by Hira’s “Gentle Annie.” This ice cream shop offers a wide variety of flavors and hefty servings, and you’ll meet plenty of friendly locals as well.
