To the north, guests will find Huron National Forest. Encompassing 437,287 acres of woodlands punctuated by lakes and rivers, the national forest contains an abundance of jack pines, which provide an important habitat for the Kirtland's warbler, a small, yellow-chested songbird that nearly went extinct 50 years ago, but has since recovered thanks to careful management of the pines in which it makes its nests. Other points of interest in the forest include Iargo Springs, the Lumberman's Monument, the River Road National Scenic Byway, and the Highbanks River Trail, the last two of which follow along the banks of the Au Sable River, a designated trout stream that is a popular destination for fishing, tubing, kayaking, and canoeing. Every summer, the stream hosts the annual Au Sable River Canoe Marathon, which is one of the oldest canoe races in the United States.

With 179 acres of pristine lake water lapping right up to the cottage's backyard, guests will be well-positioned to enjoy fishing, row boating, kayaking, and canoeing on Stylus Lake, with all three types of watercraft available to rent from nearby Logan Hills Campground. Casting their lines into the lake, guests may snag black crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, and northern pike.
For nationally-renowned trout fishing, guests can head north to the Au Sable River, where they can also go on kayaking, canoeing, and tubing trips organized by the Rollway Resort. For even more recreation on the abundant lakes, streams, and rivers in the surrounding region, guests can head to the Rifle River State Recreation Area, where the Rollway Resort offers kayak and canoe rentals.
At the recreation area, guests will also find 14 miles of trails for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Guests will find even more trails for all of these activities, as well as horseback riding, off-roading, and snowmobiling in Huron National Forest. Many of these trails can be found along the River Road National Scenic Byway, The forest also contains a large portion of the 220-mile Michigan Shore-to-Shore Trail, which runs all the way from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan.
The forest is also an excellent area for birdwatching. In the parts of the forest that are dominated by jack pines, guests will have opportunities to spot the once-endangered Kirtland's warbler. Kingfishers can be found in and around the Au Sable River, and bald eagles can be seen along the Highbanks River Trail in the summer.
