Batesland is located near South Dakota’s epic Badlands National Park, in the southwest of the state. This region of wind-sculpted mesas, pinnacles, and hoodoos, created by erosion scouring away the multicolored layers of rock over the eons, is an otherworldly landscape of eerie solitude and immense natural beauty. The national park can be explored on foot, via numerous hiking trails, on horseback, with local companies offering riding tours, or by car to cover the greatest variety of terrain. The park also includes North America’s largest undisturbed prairie habitat which includes wildlife ranging from buffalo to coyotes and the rare black-footed ferret. Batesland is also about two hours from Rapid City, the gateway to the Black Hills, allowing daytrips to other South Dakota attractions such as Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, or historic Deadwood.
