Wildlife watching
From sweeping emerald valleys to jaw-dropping big wave beaches and red-rock canyons, the island of Kauai is renowned for outstanding natural beauty. A truck kitted out with top-quality camping gear is the best way to really experience its wild side, allowing glampers to discover secret beaches and embark on a road trip at the drop of a hat. Beyond dramatic scenery, the island is also a destination for outdoor sports, from snorkeling to hiking, paddle boarding and, of course, surfing. The island's North Shore boasts a seventeen-mile stretch of coastline lined with towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls and sea caves.
The eastern side of the island, known as the Coconut Coast, is the most inhabited and boasts golden sandy beaches, giant waterfalls and the Wailua River, ideal for kayaking. The South Coast's Poipu Beach is a snorkeler's paradise and hiking through trails in the red-rock canyons of Kokee State Park is a must. Bird lovers should visit the Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge, where endangered birds can be seen nesting in the refuge's cliffs, including the Hawaiian Gallinule, red-footed boobies, tropicbirds, albatrosses and frigate birds.
