Idyllic places to stay in California: vacations for groups

This lovely cabin is a great option for Sierra Nevada getaways. Glamping in California here means that guests will be able to explore some stunning areas of wildlife and the mountains in the region are spellbinding. The cabin is also a fabulous choice for weekend getaways from Nevada City as the bright lights of the city are around 30 minutes away by car.

The custom-built California cabin rental can sleep a large group of up to nine guests and it sits on a fantastic 200-acre developing eco-preserve in the Sierras. There are three bedrooms as well as a pull-out futon in the large main room and the hosts provide several other handy additions including a full kitchen, a stove with wood, a gorgeous 800-square foot redwood deck, and a developed spring 150 yards away.

Offering more privacy than any of the other cabins, Radiance cabin is a spacious, 3-bedroom cabin that allows in ample natural light but is also well shaded throughout the day, keeping guests cool in the summertime. The airy main room and redwood deck offer plenty of space for guests and their group to relax, while the custom-built kitchen has everything guests need for short and long stays.

Please note that Radiance cabin does not have an indoor bathroom but does have its own secluded outdoor shower as well as a clean, private outhouse 50 feet away from the cabin. There is also an indoor shower and flush toilet available at the main house just down the hill.

Glampers should also have four-wheel drive during the winter months. All cars can drive in during the non-snow season.

Waterfalls and swimming holes are available within a five-minute drive, with many more hiking trails and river access points within a 30-45-minute drive. The location in the mountains will take you far outside the hustle and bustle of the city, but don't worry—there is a small store just down the road with many essentials, as well as a gas station, organic market, and cafe within 30 minutes' drive.

Things to note:

PET POLICY: Your well-behaved pets are welcome for a fee of $10 per pet, per night. Please note there may be other guests with pets on the property, so any pets you bring must get along with other animals and people.

CELL RECEPTION/INTERNET ACCESS: There is little to no cell reception on the property. Consider your stay an opportunity to disconnect from the virtual world and unwind. However, there is Wi-Fi available outside the main house if you need.

ELECTRICITY: Electricity in the cabin is via a solar generator system. There is also a 4 battery-powered lanterns inside the cabin that will sufficiently light the space and bedrooms in the evening for backup if needed.

VEHICLE ACCESS: Approximately 24 miles from Nevada City, California, the property is located about a mile down a gravel road. Four-wheel drive is required in wintertime (we are at higher elevation and frequently get snow), but the roads are accessible to any car in the warmer months.

DRINKING WATER: There is a developed spring where guests can obtain fresh drinking water 150 yards away from Radiance Cabin. Please bring your own bottles/containers.

SMOKING/FIRE SAFETY: During high fire season (summer and early fall) we must be extremely careful with fires and smoking. Smoking is allowed on the cabin decks, fire pit and picnic areas, and in your vehicle but not in the outback on trails as it is prohibited by the local forest service.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS: On the property you will find many miles of developed trails and forest roads to explore. We are located only 5 miles from Malakoff Diggins State Park and close to the beautiful Yuba River and Bullard’s Bar. The small town of North San Juan is 20 minutes’ drive away and offers several restaurants, a gas station, a locally owned thrift store, and a small organic market. Nevada City and Grass Valley are approximately 45 minutes’ drive away with many options for dining and shopping. Please don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations!
