The Strait of Juan de Fuca lies about half a mile to the north, where the Salish Sea connects to the Pacific Ocean, with the American-Canadian border in between. To the south, guests will find Olympic National Park, which encompasses 922,000 acres of old-growth temperate rainforests and snow-covered mountains. The park is home to an abundance of diverse flora and fauna, such as Roosevelt elk, black bears, and black-tailed deer.
Downtown Port Angeles is about half an hour to the east, where guests will find shops, restaurants, and attractions such as the Feiro Marine Life Center, the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, and the Elwha River Casino. Guests will find many options for outdoor recreation and enjoyment of nature at Olympic National Park. For hiking, they will find many trails, such as the Moments in Time Nature Trail, Marymere Falls, Mount Storm King Trail, Pyramid Peak Trail, and Spruce Railroad Trail, all of which are in the nearby Lake Crescent area of the park.
For boating, kayaking, and canoeing, they can head to either Lake Crescent, Lake Ozette, and Lake Quinault or the Hoh, Elwha, Sol Duc, Queets, and Quinalt Rivers. With 75 miles of Pacific Coast shoreline, 600 lakes, and 4,000 miles of rivers and streams full of wild salmon, trout, and char, guests will find plenty of prime fishing spots as well.
Opportunities for wildlife viewing abound in the park, with 300 species of birds and many mammals to be spotted, such as black-tailed deer, Olympic marmots, Roosevelt elk, and black bears. The wildlife and natural splendor of the setting lend themselves to photography as well.
The Olympic Mountains are popular sites for mountain climbing, with Mt. Olympus, Mt. Deception, and Mt. Constance being the highest peaks. In the winter, guests will find areas for downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing in the Hurricane Ridge area.
Around the coast, guests will also find beaches and areas for swimming, sailing, sea kayaking, and surfing, such as Sail and Paddle Park, Hollywood Beach, Salt Creek Recreation Area, Rialto Beach, and Shi Shi Beach. -
