Johnson City, Texas was founded in 1879 by James Polk Johnson, uncle to President Lyndon Johnson, who grew up here. It’s located in the center of the state, just west of Austin. Being so close to a big city makes this town easy to get to for both city residents and those flying in from out of state. Set along the Pedernales River, visitors have a convenient place to jump in and cool off during the hot, humid summer. The nearby Pedernales Falls State Park offers trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Worth visiting is the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park, which has the ranch where LJB spent much of his time during his presidency. Head north to the Colorado River to go white water rafting or kayaking.
