Peaceful Adobe and Stone Cottage Rental near Big Bend National Park in West Texas
"Beautiful location and Bryn was a very helpful host. Super close to the park and the amenities provided were excellent. I don't really have any compl…"
This cottage rental next to Big Bend National Park in South Texas is peaceful, offers incredible mountain views, and sleeps up to two people comfortably with a queen-size bed. If guests have up to four people total in their group, a campsite with a raised tent pad, fire pit, and picnic table is available for overflow for $40 per night and can accommodate an additional two guests.
The outdoor kitchen situated on the porch has a small dining table, a chiminea, and comfortable seating for relaxing with a book or enjoying the view. It comes equipped with a small refrigerator, four burner cooktop, dishes, utensils, and an outdoor grill. There is also filtered drinking water, cooking oil, spices, coffee, and a selection of teas.
The coffee system is a porcelain Melita cone/ filter and insulated carafe, which is ready for coffee lovers upon arrival. The sink is an old enamel/cast iron one from the 50's, with built-in drain boards and cupboard space below. There's a large stainless steel container with a faucet that provides water to the sink. Guests can also bring hot water for dish washing from the spigot located in the outdoor shower a few steps away, in the enameled kettle provided for that purpose. (Simple, but it works!)
The bathroom facilities are about 30 feet from the suite rental in a small adobe structure, which houses a sink and a county-approved propane incinerating toilet. An incinerating toilet is meant mostly for solid waste, but can also handle some liquid. Peeing in the great outdoors is not a requirement, but is greatly appreciated. The stone outdoor shower offers plenty of privacy, yet glampers can still enjoy the view of the mountains from over the top of its cedar gate. (There's plenty of hot water, of course!)
This glamping property is situated within a tranquil setting and boasts incredible mountain views. There are two fire pits outside the glamping accommodation, which is perfect for guests to enjoy toasting s'mores, singing camp songs, and stargazing—Big Bend is one of the best dark sky areas in North America.
There is a propane wall-mounted heater within the accommodation and an oscillating floor fan is also provided. Guests are not required to bring their own towels, toilet paper, soap, and linen as these are provided by the host. There is wireless internet available on the premises, though not inside the adobe cabin itself.
There is also an outdoor kitchen, equipped with a stovetop, small refrigerator, all the dishes and utensils you might need, and some basics such as spices, cooking oil, coffee and various teas. There is also a charcoal Weber barbecue, and while the host doesn't provide charcoal and lighter fluid, previous guests often leave behind what they don't use. Ask; chances are there's a supply.
The bathroom facility is a separate adobe building, 30 feet from the main house, and has a sink and an incinerating toilet. The shower is a lovely and private stone outdoor shower, with an arched entryway, many fossils in the walls, and a cedar gate. It is located at the main house.

When I'm able to do so, I allow extra time between guests to throughly sanitize. Every hard surface, handle, knob, or switch, is cleaned with disinfectant wipes. All bedding, including heavier bedding such as quilts and blankets, are washed and rotated between guests. Even floors are mopped with a sanitizing solution. The extra time allows the house to be thoroughly aired out. I do my own cleaning and wear a mask and gloves when doing so. Also important, I have had very little contact with others during these covid times, and always mask when in public.

While the host does accept children, they make an exception for very young kids. There are too many ways a little child can hurt themselves at the property, rocks, cacti, and stone steps. There is a campsite near the cabin equipped with a 15-foot by 15-foot raised pad for a tent, a fire pit and a picnic table, which is also the best place for a wifi signal.
Pets are not allowed. Please no smoking indoors; ashtrays are provided on the porch for those who must smoke.
It's extremely important guests understand that this house is off-grid and functions entirely on a rain catchment system. Mindfulness is called for. There is a notebook provided inside that explains the functions and rules of the house, where to find the drinking water, how things work. Every guest is responsible for reading that information.
