A reclaimed-wood cabin under the palms with a garage door for a bedroom wall. Roll it up and the bed opens straight onto a covered deck with a hot tub and a clear roof you can watch the sky through. Real kitchen, fire pit, three miles from the oldest city in America. Sleeps four.THE ROLL-UP DOORThe bedroom's fourth wall is a corrugated garage door. Roll it up in the morning and the room becomes a porch — bed, breeze, palms overhead, the spa three steps away. Roll it down at night and it is the snuggest room in the world. It closes and locks like any other door, so the bedroom is exactly as open as you want it to be. Nobody forgets it.INSIDEWalls of warm reclaimed pallet wood and corrugated metal, a white vaulted ceiling that makes the place feel twice its size, and a brick wall behind the dining table. The kitchen is a real one — range, oven, full-size refrigerator and a big butcher-block island with stools pulled up to it. You can genuinely cook here, which is not true of every tiny home. A long table for dinner. In the living room, a sofa, a smart TV and a ceiling fan turning slowly, and a full futon that sleeps two more. The bathroom is corrugated metal and wood, with a walk-in shower and a round mirror over a live-edge vanity.THE DECKCovered, with a clear roof, so the palms and the sky stay overhead while the weather stays off. The hot tub sits at one end, chairs and a table at the other, and the trees come right up to the rail. Out front, a fire pit ring set into white shell.HOW IT FEELSThe door rolled up and coffee in bed with the palms moving. The long middle of an afternoon in the spa, light coming down through the roof. Dinner at the big table. The fire lit after dark, and the sound of frogs starting up.WHAT IT IS FORCouples who want somewhere with a story. Two couples travelling together. Anyone who has scrolled past a hundred identical rentals and is looking for the one that is nothing like the others.WHERE IT ISThree miles from historic downtown St. Augustine, about ten minutes from the beach. Please keep it moderate after 10 PM.Hi, I'm Greg. I spent my Navy career on submarines, where space is measured in inches and every fitting has to earn its place. That is more or less how I think about building a tiny home. I have been hosting for over eight years, and what I care about is that a place feels considered rather than furnished - that the kitchen actually works, that the deck is somewhere you want to sit, that nothing is there just to fill a corner. Casa Gaucho is the one people remember for the roll-up door. I hope you do too.• A roll-up garage door in the bedroom that opens straight onto the covered deck• A private spa on that deck, yours alone• A real kitchen — range, oven, full-size refrigerator and a large island• A fire pit just steps from the door, set in crushed shell• Private outdoor shower and an outdoor grill• One queen bedroom plus a full-size futon in the living room — sleeps 4• Pallet wood walls and vaulted ceilings — a real cabin, not a beige rental• About 3 miles from historic downtown; a rideshare into town runs roughly $5• Pet friendly — one dog with a feeCasa Gaucho started with the garage door. I wanted one room where the wall could simply come away - where you could roll it up in the morning and have the bed open onto the deck, the palms and the spa, and roll it down at night and have the snuggest room on the property. Everything else was built around that idea.So the walls are reclaimed pallet wood and corrugated metal rather than drywall, the ceiling is vaulted and white to keep the light moving, and the kitchen is a real one - range, oven, full-size refrigerator, a butcher-block island you can actually cook at. The deck is covered with a clear roof, so the sky stays overhead and the weather stays off, and the hot tub sits at one end of it. Out front there is a fire pit ring set into white shell. It is three miles from the oldest city in America and it sounds like frogs at night. If you have scrolled past a hundred identical rentals, this is the one that is nothing like the others.Casa Gaucho sits back in the palms and pines on the west side of St. Augustine, on a lot it shares with a handful of other tiny homes, each with its own space.
