Boasting nearly 1,500 acres of surface area and 26 miles of shoreline, the lake holds the distinction of having the highest elevation of any lake east of the Mississippi River, and it is a popular site for swimming, boating, and fishing.
The rental and the lake are surrounded by Nantahala National Forest, which encompasses more than half a million acres of woodlands, mountains, valleys, gorges, lakes, streams, rivers, and a variety of trails, including a portion of the Appalachian Trail. Some of the highlights of the forest are its many waterfalls, nearby examples of which include Silver Run Falls, High Falls, Whitewater Falls, and Rainbow Falls.
