Guests can relax on 40 acres of private waterfront property for a one-of-a-kind experience! The retreat was painted and renovated in fall of 2016 including three updated bathrooms, a new HVAC system, new blinds, refinished floors, new floor coverings, and updated cabinets and doors. Located on a peninsula between two large creeks that connect to the intercoastal waterway, the property enjoys fresh breezes, gorgeous sunrises, and endless views over miles of marsh grass and water.
The getaway has a fascinating history, it was deeded as a Lord Proprietors Grant in 1710 to a plantation owner named Joseph Russell who received the land from the King of England. Since then there’s only been a handful of owners with the property passing between generations of the current owner’s family. This getaway is one of only two houses on the 40-acre property (only one rented and both owned by the same owner). Guests will drive a mile down Russell Creek Road and then another mile on a private road to the end of the peninsula that comprises the land of the retreat that is far away from any car traffic.
From the getaway, guests can walk or ride the golf cart a short way along the marsh front to the property’s private deepwater dock and boat ramp. Hanging out on the private dock is great fun or if guests have a motorboat they can drive out to the intercoastal waterway or ocean. Nature lovers will love this beautiful, isolated, and natural location.
This property offers more than a typical beach vacation. Glampers can explore by land and sea using the property's bikes and two fishing kayaks and one double kayak (life jackets provided) or take leisurely walks down country roads and forest paths. Guests are encouraged to immerse themselves in the unique nature and beauty of the Low Country’s rich tidal creeks and marshes.
Often, guests plan to visit the many attractions on and around Edisto Island but they are so relaxed they rarely leave the property! After a walk or bike ride down the private dirt road (the host provide bikes and a golf cart), or a kayak along the creeks or through the marsh, guests will be content to just hang out on the porch with a cool glass of iced tea and a good book. Even though there are some good restaurants on the island, guests may want to catch fresh seafood and stop at a local farm stand to cook for themselves. The hosts especially like to eat the fresh crab that they catch off the dock and the fish they catch in the creeks.
There is something for everyone on Edisto Island including an excellent golf course on the island and a second golf course only 20 minutes away. Anglers catch a variety of fish right off the dock or take their boat or the two fishing kayaks to enjoy some of the finest fishing on Edisto Island. The hosts like fishing with live bait such as shrimp and minnows - guests can use a minnow trap or shrimp net to catch live bait in season.
Bird watching and the sounds of nature are captivating here: birds flying over wetlands that stretch as far as the eye can see; dolphins swimming in the creeks; bald eagles, wood storks (in spring), and woodpeckers, as well as a countless number of waterbirds. Guests can see lots of nature walking around the property and if they walk up the mile up the private road - they will see flocks of birds near the gate in the saltwater lakes.
Guests can enjoy catching crabs off the private dock (crabs can be caught all year round although some seasons are better than others) and are welcome to use the host's crab traps or simply a string and weight. Guests are also welcome to use the house's golf cart to explore the property as long as they stay off the sand flats and marsh areas.
If guests need something, they just need to call the host or the property's handyman (during the weekday mornings) and generally, the hosts can attend to guest's needs quickly (although everyone is on island time!).
There are plenty of great adventures on Edisto such as the 4,360 acre Botany Bay park with miles of beachfront or the State Park also with over a mile of beach - the hosts like to grab lunch after an activity in the morning at many of the excellent lunch places on Edisto such as Sea Cow Eatery, Whaley’s Store, or (when bathing suits are wet) McConkey's Jungle Shack.
Guests can also explore Edisto Island's historic churches, historical museum, plantations, and unique activities such as the Edisto Island Serpentarium (open April-October), Bingo Nights at the Lions Club (summer only), and even blueberry picking (June to early July). Glampers can enjoy a day at the beach and then come home the beautiful endless views. Glampers can also buy vegetables from Kings Market or George & Pink’s who have wonderful produce and boiled peanuts (in season) or buy fresh shrimp and fish (or eat it there) at Flowers Seafood, or other local seafood stores.
Via motorboat, guests can take a 20-30 minute trip to remote beaches such as Deveaux Bank at the mouth of the Edisto River or eat lunch at Bohicket Marina on Seabrook Island. Glampers should take advantage of local attractions which include kayak tours, fishing guides, and shrimp boat charters. Guests should note that at least one person in the party for every four adults must be over 30 years old unless guests have written permission from the owner.
