Named for the surrounding limestone cliffs, this town was first settled in 1852. Today it’s known as the Norwegian capital of Texas and many historic homes and churches from Norwegian settlers still exist. The annual Norwegian Country Christmas Tour in December is a local experience worth attending. Clifton is also considered one of the top small art communities in the nation and is home to national recognized artists. It lies along the North Bosque River, where you can jump in to cool off on a hot summer day. Spend the day kayaking, tubing, rafting, or swimming on the river. Northeast is Brazos River and Lake Whitney for more water oriented activities. Lake Whitney State Park provides fishing for catfish, bass, and striper. Scuba diving is also a popular activity.
