This North Island glamping retreat is nestled in the countryside in the locale of Tiniroto, halfway between the city of Gisborne and the town of Wairoa which are each around 50 minutes away. Gisborne offers a vibrant community with many eateries, cultural activities, and wineries to enjoy close to the accommodation. Wairoa also has a friendly community, as well as an abundance of sites of natural beauty.

The nearest airport is Gisborne Airport, which is just over one hour away.

From exploring the local area to planning adventures in the stunning great outdoors, glampers will have so much to choose from during their stay in Tiniroto. Glamping here means guests will be in the Gisborne/Wairoa area where there are many sites of natural beauty including, Te Urewera National Park and Lake Waikaremoana, which contains the largest untouched expanse of native forest in the country.

Other sites include Mahia Peninsular, Whakiki Lagoon, Clonkeen Caves, the Hackfalls Arboretum, and the Morere Reserve and Hot Springs. The nearby city of Gisborne offers chances to enjoy art and culture at the Tairawhiti Museum. The local community has many eateries, shops, and wineries to explore such as the Bushmere Estate, TW winery, Bridge Estate and Miltons winery. Both towns are within an hour's drive from Mahaanui Cottage.

For the more adventurous the Rere Rockslide has fascinating geological formations and waterfalls to explore. There are also opportunities in the area for surfing, windsurfing, horseback riding, hiking, kitesurfing, and mountain biking. The leisurely glamper can enjoy swimming, kayaking, fishing, and picnicking on the Hangaroa River from Doneraille Park or from private access available from the property.

Guests can experience the locals' secret waterfall during the summer and there are marked farm walks available for their enjoyment. Farm tours are also possible, if time permits, for NZ $50 per adult.

Additional info

Off-road motorbikes and your own horses are allowed with prior agreement only. Stables and horse paddocks provided at the main homestead.

The property is non-smoking and not suitable for children or pets.
No outdoor fires allowed as there is a complete fire ban all summer and the cabin is surrounded by mature old native trees and dry undergrowth.

Check-in is from 3 p.m and check-out is at 11 am.
Leave your car at the farm homestead.
If guests arrive between 4 and 6 pm they will be taken to the cabin in one of our 4x4 vehicles and return collection arranged.
If guests arrive outside of these times (if we are not home) they will be provided with backpacks to transfer their belongings to, a map, headtorches and walkie talkies and will walk the easy 15 minutes down to the river cabin.
Please tell us your likely arrival time and we do our best to be home to chauffeur our guests down to the cabin.
