Nelson, a city on the South Island that is situated on the Tasman Bay, is often referred to as New Zealand's sunniest city. It is also the oldest city in the South Island, being founded in 1841. Nelson is surrounded by mountain ranges and is close to Abel Tasman National Park and Kahurangi National Park. Additionally, there are several prominent cave systems nearby at Takaka Hill and Mount Arthur, the latter of which contains the Ellis Basin, the deepest cave system in the southern hemisphere. The closest airport is Nelson Airport, a regional hub for New Zealand.
