The Central Otago region is a year-round destination. Guests can ski and snowboard at Treble Cone Ski Field or Cardrona Alpine Resort, go kayaking and sailing on Lake Wanaka, or take a hiking trek through Mount Aspiring National Park. Other winter activities include dog sled tours and snowboarding. Cycling enthusiasts can go for a ride along the Otago Central Rail Trail, where they will ride past rugged landscapes, gold mining settlements, rivers, and gorges. There are plenty of off-trail areas for adventurous mountain bikers. The Roxburgh Gorge Trail is also popular with cyclists and hikers.

There are more than 30 wineries in this region. Wine tastings, vineyard tours, and special dining events are offered in the surrounding areas, including Alexandra, Bendigo, and the Gibbston Valley. Craft markets in Wanaka and Queenstown make a fun day trip, as do the historic halls and sites in Cardrona Village. Music and film festivals, including the Cardrona Folk Music Festival, take place throughout the year.
