Guests can visit Montserrat, which is perhaps the most important spiritual and cultural center of Catalonia. Santa Maria de Montserrat is a Benedictine abbey and basilica located in the Montserrat mountain, which is called Monistrol de Monstserrat. The monastery started as the Hermitage of Santa Maria, the Mother of Christ, in 1025. A bigger Romanesque chapel was built to be able to receive more pilgrims. It became one of the best known shrines in the Christian world and the most prestigious shrine in Catalonia. The statue of the Virgin is called “La Moreneta” because of the black color of her face. The statue is a wooden Romanesque statue from the end of the 12th century. The varnish on the statue has oxidized and because of the effect of candle smoke and the smoke of lamps, the appearance is now black. The Virgin has a crown of diadems and has a ball in her hand. On her lap is a statue of Jesus Christ. He also has a crown and His hand is making a sign of blessing, while the other hand is holding a pine cone. The basilica’s style is a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance. To see it close up, one has to go through the portico on the right side of the basilica. The museum is in a building across from the basilica and it is built underground, comprising of two stories. This was built by the architect Josep Puig I Cadafalch in 1929. There are many works of art donated by rich Catalans. There are archeology pieces from the Bible lands, gold and silver work from the 15th -20th centuries, and beautiful paintings from masters such as Caravaggio, El Greco, Sisley, Dali, and many Catalan artists from the early 20th century. Camp Nou was built in 1957 and is the largest stadium in Europe with a capacity for 99,000 people. You will be impressed by its sheer size and beauty. The Cathedral: Built over a period of six centuries, the foundation stone of the Cathedral was laid down in 1298. The building itself is a mosaic of architectural styles and eras, dominated by the Gothic style; its calling card is its neo-Gothic façade, dating back to 1890. Its interior is filled with light and surprises for the visitor. The choir stalls, 25 side chapels, the crypt of Santa Eulàlia and the 13 cloister geese; trusted guardians of the cathedral; will delight all visitors. Magic Fountains: Magic Fountain is the main feature of the collection of waterfalls and ponds on Avinguda Maria Cristina, which stretches from the Palau Nacional to Plaça Espanya in Montjuïc. This spectacular fountain is very popular because of its water arrangements, sound and lighting. It was built for the 1929 World Fair by Carles Buïgas on the site where The Four Columns by Josep Puig i Cadafalch had stood before being demolished in 1928. Using extremely artisan methods, up to thirty water arrangements could be used with different colors. In the 1980s music was added, and shortly before the 1992 Olympic Games it was completely renovated Palau de la Musica: One of Barcelona’s finest examples of Catalan Art Nouveau is also the home to an impressive and unique concert hall. A colored ceramic bench, a fairy tale dragon and a large hall full of classical columns lend these gardens a dreamlike quality. Park Guell is one of Gaudi´s most emblematic and unique work. Sagrada Familia: In this project, Gaudí envisioned a colossal church greatly influenced by forms of nature. Construction began in 1882 and the architect devoted more than 40 years of his life to this structure. In November 2010 was consecrated and proclaimed a minor Basilica by Pope Benedict XVI. And the construction work continues to this day. The cathedral has evolved over time to incorporate various architectural styles.
