With a large swimming pond right on the doorstep and five miles of hiking/biking trails to explore, many guests will not need to stray too far to be entertained. Four kayaks are available for guests to use, and kids will love swimming and diving off the two docks. The bike shop on premises has rental bikes. The owner is the manager of the Pike 2 Bike, the only biking trail that was once a Super Highway. In order to eliminate two tunnels, the PA Turnpike abandoned this section in 1968, and it has become a nationwide attraction. The owners lead tours on the trail, and it is a bike ride unlike anything guests will ever experience.
In the wider area, the Green Ridge State Park over the border into Maryland has hiking, boating, hunting, and fishing. Guests can drive to Old Bedford Village, an interesting historic village just 45 minutes by car. Hikers and bikers can also use the cottage as a convenient stop-off for the popular C&O path and Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), a 350-mile trail between Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Cumberland, Maryland, and Washington, DC.
At a 35-minute drive southwest over the border into Maryland, guests will find themselves in the city of Cumberland, home to a heritage railway, which is a steam train that runs alongside the GAP, and trains depart from downtown for views of the Allegheny Mountains. Additionally, the Flight 93 Memorial is under an hour's drive away; Berkely Springs, America's oldest spa, is less than 30 minutes away; and Raystown Lake. with a water park, parasailing, scuba diving, and much more, is less than an hour's drive.
Slightly further afield, Ohiopyle—the home of Frank Lloyd Wright's "Falling Water" and "Kentuck Knob"—are only 1.5 hours drive and is the perfect place for those who love whitewater rafting. Fort Necessity, the start of the French American War, (the real World War I and the war that made America, started by George Washington) is only 1.5 hours away, near Ohiopyle. -
