To the north, south, and west, the area is surrounded by Rio Grande National Forest and a number of mountains, including Hayden Peak, Flagstaff Mountain, and Saguache Peak.
Encompassing 1.84 million acres of mountains, valleys, and river canyons, Rio Grande National Forest contains a diverse array of ecosystems, ranging from alpine tundras to foothills covered in pinyon pine and juniper. These ecosystems, in turn, provide habitats for a large variety of wildlife, including bighorn sheep, black bears, elk, mule deer, and mountain goats.
