Note that the lake is a reservoir and is at its lowest water levels September - November. Swimming is still possible, but the walk to the swimmable area of the lake is farther. During this time, the bottom of the lake offers remarkable hikes, and within a 15-minute drive away there is a really scenic clear water swimming hole with a tire swing.
We also recommend a day trip to the famous Yuba river, which is approx. one hour away.

HERE’S MORE TO KNOW!
When you made your reservation, you acknowledged the following terms and conditions below, but we want to make sure you have them handy when preparing for your visit with us!
Your safety, comfort and overall experience are priorities for us. To ensure a pleasant experience for all guests, we kindly request that you carefully review this information. These guidelines help us maintain a high standard of service and ensure that everyone enjoys their stay to the fullest.
1. Off-Grid Environment: We are located in a serene, rural area and are fully self-reliant for all of our needs. It is important for us to maintain eco-friendly practices to minimize our impact on the environment. Here’s what that means for you:
Electricity: All our power needs are generated through solar energy, and we utilize a generator as a backup as needed. There is one charging station located in the communal kitchen where you can charge personal devices such as a smartphone, tablet, computer, or speaker. We do not have the capacity to run high-draw appliances like hair dryers, blenders, hot plates, toasters or irons. We recommend you bring your own portable charger to easily charge your devices.
Water: We feature delicious well water sourced on-site. You may consume water from any water station or the communal kitchen on property. Water found next to the toilets in buckets are for handwashing only and not for consumption.
Trash: There is no trash service on site, so we ask that you take with you all trash that you generate and dispose of it off-property in an appropriate location, including any meat and/or seafood scraps. We have a compost bin you may use in the communal kitchen for all other food scraps that is cleared daily.
Toilets: Composting toilets can be found throughout the property for guest use. These are waterless toilets that feature a comfortable, standard toilet seat situated above a tank where the waste is collected. From here, we do all the work by adding microorganisms and peat moss to break down the waste into compost, which can then be used as fertilizer. Please note that nothing can go into the tank except for the toilet paper we provide. All other items may be disposed of in the trash can found in each stall.
2. Lake Use and Safety: Camp Far West Reservoir is a beautiful and fun place to play while you visit us, and lake access is included in your stay. The lake, operated by South Sutter Water District, is great for swimming, boating, using water toys, and fishing (by permit). Access is available from our property from sunrise to sunset. Use of the lake in any capacity is at your own risk.
3. Pet Policy: We welcome up to two (2) well-behaved dogs and/or cats per site with the following general guidelines:
- Dogs must be on-leash when not securely inside your tent or RV.
- You must pick up all waste from your dog and take it with you for disposal.
- If we observe behavior that is deemed aggressive, dangerous or a nuisance in any way, we have the right to ask you to leave the property immediately without offering any type of refund on pet deposit and/or site rental fees.
Pet fees are as follows:
> Deposit: $100 per pet (refundable upon check-out if no damage has been assessed.)
> Rate: $10 per dog per day
If you’ve indicated on your reservation that you will bring a pet(s), then you will receive a separate, more comprehensive pet agreement prior to arrival for review and signature.
4. Animal and Wildlife Interaction: We share our property with a variety of animals including domestic, livestock and wild animals, including but not limited to: dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, rabbits, bees, cows, deer, coyotes, horses, reptiles, rodents and insects. Domestic animals such as dogs and cats may be friendly, but please ask for permission before approaching or interacting with them. If you encounter any wild animals, such as deer, coyotes, cows or horses, observe them from a safe distance and do not attempt to feed or approach them. Please also be aware of potential hazards, such as insects and reptiles, and take precautions to avoid bites or stings. By respecting the animals and wildlife on our property, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for yourself and these creatures.
5. Quiet Hours: We request that guests maintain courtesy for others by minimizing disturbances certain times of the day for the sake of quiet enjoyment, which are as follows:
Sunday - Thursday: 10:00pm - 8:00am
Friday - Saturday: 11:00pm - 8:00am
6. First Aid & Emergency Procedures: We offer basic first aid supplies if needed. If more attention and care is needed, please notify us, and we recommend seeking professional medical attention at your choice of facility.
In the event of an emergency, such as a fire, meet at the flagpole to receive further instruction from on-site team members.
7. Safety & Security Procedures: For your safety, in addition to agreeing to and abiding by these terms and conditions, follow all signs posted on property, as well as guidance provided by on-site team members.
You are responsible for securing all your personal belongings while on-property, including providing your own lock to secure your tent.
8. Indemnification: By agreeing to these terms and conditions, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Heartland Retreat, its owners, employees, volunteers, and agents from and against any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including legal fees) arising out of or related to your stay at our property, including but not limited to personal injury, property damage, or any other incident resulting from your actions or negligence.
9. Insurance: We strongly recommend that all guests obtain travel insurance to cover any unforeseen events or emergencies that may occur before or during your stay. This may include trip cancellations, interruptions, medical emergencies, or other travel-related issues. By agreeing to these terms and conditions, you acknowledge that Heartland Retreat is not responsible for any costs, losses, or damages incurred as a result of such events and that travel insurance is your responsibility.
10. Updates and Changes: We reserve the right to update or change these Terms and Conditions at any time. Any changes will be effective immediately upon posting on our website. Your continued use of our services after such changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms and Conditions.
