Lake Hope is 35 miles away and Lake Alma is 24 miles away, and are both in Vinton County. They have healthy populations of saugeye, catfish, bass, and sunfish. For those guests who are not such enthusiastic anglers, they need not worry for there is plenty more to do outside in the area. Part of the Gatewood Trail System is 15 miles of a single track nestled in the shadow of Bob Evans Farms and the University of Rio Grande. This noodle bowl of trails offers premier hiking and mountain biking.
The Hocking Hills area is a short forty-minute drive from the property. With acres of enchanting woodlands, waterfalls, and gorges, it's a perfect place for the avid outdoorsman, or woman, to explore. Popular destinations that guests have enjoyed include Ash Cave and Old Man's Cave, the Cantwell Cliffs, Cedar Falls, Rockbridge, and Conkel's Hollow.
During the holiday season, the county seat of Gallipolis, becomes a postcard for Hallmark. Gallipolis in Lights begins on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and runs until the beginning of the new year. Gallipolis-in-Lights is a spectacular, must-see event. Also, Bob Evans Farms hosts a fall festival at the Homestead each fall on the second weekend in October. The Village of Rio Grande puts off an amazing fireworks show on that Saturday of the festival called Rockets Over Rio. Gallipolis offers a beautiful downtown city park, a park front area with a great view of the beautiful Ohio River, and several quaint shops. Gallia County has two great wineries, which are Merry Family Winery and Craft Beer and Twisted Vine Vineyards.
The Mothman Museum is not far from the cottage. It is just across the river from Gallipolis in Pt. Pleasant, WV. There is so much to see and do in the area but with the peaceful rest and relaxation that our guests find at the cottage and its tranquil surroundings, it might be hard to find one really good reason to leave the cottage at all during their stay.
