Chitina

This small community of just 125 residents is in an extraordinarily privileged location: near the confluence of the dramatic Copper River and the Chitina River, with the spectacular 16,390-foot-high Mount Blackburn in the background. In summer, Copper River is packed with the most prized of all salmon varieties – the Copper River red salmon. Head to the Liberty Falls State Recreation Site for hiking, a relaxing picnic by the waterfall, or for a fun day exploring with the family. The town itself has a variety of amenities despite its small size, it is easy to find groceries, gas, eateries, fishing charters, church services, and more. And head to the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park’s Chitina Ranger Station to learn a little bit more about the history of the areas.
