Gulf Islands National Seashore
12 miles straight-line distance20 kilometers straight-line distanceThe warm Gulf waters and soft white sand are just a few steps away from this beachfront property on Dauphin Island in Alabama. Dauphin means "dolphin" in French and the island is referred to as "Heart of the Gulf Coast". It is connected to the mainland by the Dauphin Island Bridge, a 3-mile stretch of the two-lane Alabama State Route 193 in Mobile County. Those visiting Dauphin Island should be prepared to be surrounded by all things nature, especially the miles of wide open white sand beaches like those at Public Beach.
The Audubon Bird Sanctuary and The Dauphin Island Sea Lab's Estuarium are both interesting places to visit. Boat ramps, a large public pier, historic sites, and several restaurants are all nearby. Mobile Bay is a small inlet of the Gulf and home to 19th-century Fort Gaines. There are several cities within easy reach of Dauphin Island, including some in Mississipi and Florida. Many of these can be reached in just over an hours drive.
Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is the closest major airport.Activities near Dauphin Island

Long walks on white sand beaches alongside crystal blue water seem to be a favorite on Dauphin Island. That, as well as fishing. Lighthouse cruises, dolphin-watching cruises or sunset cruises are other options for those looking to get out on the water.
Bike and kayak rentals are available and are both great means of getting out and exploring land and sea. The bike trails snake throughout the island and will offer tremendous scenery. Another option on land is a trek along a 1000-foot long boardwalk through swamps, dunes, and shoreline at the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. Here visitors will be able to observe nesting platforms and perhaps catch glimpses of many species of birds who migrate to the sanctuary.
The Dauphin Island Sea Lab's Estuarium highlights the four key habitats of coastal Alabama: the Mobile Tensaw River Delta, Mobile Bay, the Barrier Islands and the Northern Gulf of Mexico. A massive Exhibit Hall, a huge stingray touch pool, and the Living Marsh Boardwalk are all exciting and educational opportunities at the Estruarium. The 31 aquariums display over 100 species and several plants, animals, and other natural resources are showcased as well. There is also an opportunity to join a walking tour that will take visitors through over 155 acres of maritime forest and marshes and as well as dunes which lead down to the beach. -
