Nome, Alaska

Detailed location provided after booking

Scenic views
This accommodation is located in Nome, Alaska, where it is situated near the Anvil Creek on the historic grounds of a former mining site that dates back to the gold rush of 1900. Today, the site is a resort that provides guests with a peaceful, scenic setting in which to enjoy a getaway to the Seward Peninsula. Exploring its pristine natural surroundings, guests will find a wide-open landscape of mountains, rivers, creeks, and tundras full of wildflowers and wildlife, including wolves, caribou, beavers, river otters, wolverines, grizzly bears, moose, and musk oxen.

Nearby natural attractions include Anvil Rock, Anvil Mountain, King Mountain, the Teller Tundra Ridge, Dorothy Falls, and Newton Peak. Guests will find hiking trails at all of these locations, as well as popular slopes for skiing and snowboarding at Newtown Peak. The site is about six miles to the north of downtown Nome, which is set on the coast of Norton Sound—an inlet of the Bering Sea. Here, guests will find the Carrie M. McLain Memorial Museum, the Bering Land Bridge Visitor Center, and the headquarters of Nome Discovery Tours.

At the museum, guests can see local artifacts and learn about the history of Nome and the Bering Strait. Featuring an interactive map and exhibits of animal skulls and pelts, the visitor center provides an opportunity to learn more about the surrounding natural landscape and its flora and fauna. Through Nome Discovery Tours, guests can enjoy a variety of adventures in the Alaskan wilderness—including that of the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, which lies to the north and is only accessible by air taxi, private plane, snowmobile, or a multi-day hiking expedition. Encompassing nearly three million acres of tundra, rivers, streams, maar lakes (lakes formed from volcanic craters), lava flows, and hot springs, the preserve safeguards some of the most remote national parklands in the entire United States.

The site is about 15 minutes from Nome Airport, which has connections to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport—the nearest international airport. There are no roads leading from Anchorage or any other city with an international airport to Nome, so guests usually travel to the town by plane or by boat. Alternatively, adventurous guests can take advantage of the Nome's location at the end of the Iditarod Trail and arrive by snowmobile or dogsled!

As for birds, the surrounding region provides a haven for more than 150 migratory bird species, as well as a number of resident species, such as willow ptarmigan and snow buntings.

At Newton Peak, guests can also go skiing and snowboarding. The surrounding tundras provide a wide-open terrain on which to go ATV riding, and ATVs are available to rent directly from the host. Guests interested in snowmobiling can go on tours with Snow Cat Tours. For more outdoor adventure, guests can book a variety of tours through Nome Discovery Tours, such as van tours and guided hikes on local tundras and beaches.

A variety of guided, mining-themed activities are also available as package deals through the host. These include gold panning, metal detecting, banking, sluicing, and dredging. For guests who want to hunt for gold on their own, metal detectors are available both to rent and to purchase. The host also offers historical tours of local mining relics and fishing expeditions to local rivers and streams. Guests wishing to fish on their own will find many options, such as the Nome River and the Grand Central River.

Last but certainly not least, guests arriving in March can attend the culmination of the 1,049-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, the finish line of which is right in Nome.
